The tropical island Koh Tao is celebrated for learning to dive, but there are numerous other high-end attractions and all-time DMT and Instructor favorites on our paradise. Get off your motorbike and pay attention. Lets take a closer look at these larger than life Koh Tao landmarks.
At the top of the up road in Mae Haad we find the famous clock tower. Nobody seems to know exactly whythey build it, and what its function really is. It can't be the indication of the correct Tao time, because all fourclocks in the tower show a different one. The tower does distort the view of traffic, but surely that can't bethe reason why they took almost half a year to put it there, or can it? However, the way the turtle on top of the tower is tangled up in the power and telecom lines, truly captures and symbolizes this once widespread animal in its struggle to prevent extinction.
We are from Holland. We reclaimed a quarter of our land from the sea. A large part of our population livesbelow sea level. Our heir to the throne Prince Willem-Alexander is a specialist in water management. Surelyenough you understand that a sight like this - one of numerous tangled up water pipes - hurt us in our core.We have a saying in Holland for describing not knowing anything about a topic. Translated it goes somethinglike this: he/she didn't eat cheese on this topic. I guess that certainly applies for the ones responsible for watermanagement on Koh Tao.
Ok, enough with the cynical criticism. Here's another true landmark on Koh Tao. The Bowling and Mini Golf,Pétanque and Pool. After the last IE party we are devoted supporters of this establishment.
A little warming though. These Singha's, disguised as tigers, might distract you on the tee. And they willeventually make it impossible to hit the ball in a straight line, or even hit it at all.
Open seven days a week, except on mondays. Closed, that is... same same open, but different. Classic!
Nice picture for a resort's brochure, but can a simple DMT or IDC candidate afford such luxury?
Well, in fact, they can! It's one of the Buddha View's purveyors of shelter and lodging. In other words, it'sone of the favorite accomodations amongst DMT's. For something like 9.500 Bath per month you can crashin one of P&N's nice and well kept rooms.
Opposite P&N we find Fishy's. Well know by many DMT's and IDC candidates. Some even remember parts ofthe time they spend here. Ever attended a Margarita Monday?
Another all-time favorite with Buddha View personnel and long term students: Orachon House. Last time we checkedyou could rent a really nice room for 7.000 Bath per month, excluding water and electricity bills.
Whatever you like, need or desire, the Aukotan supermarket sells it. You name it: from cheap beer to supersoakers for Songkran, and from toilet seats to everything you need for an eighties costume party.
Tukta is: Chicken, fried garlic. Pad Thai. Massaman, Red, Green and Panang Curries. The best mango shakeson the island. It's the place to eat good Thai food for reasonable prices.
A serious note at the end of this topic. Sadly enough ATV's are a part of Koh Tao's reality. Imagine a world without ATV's. No more sweaty, shirtless, half drunk, testosterone filled male individuals tearing across the island; all in a hurry to meet their maker. However, there might be a bigger plan behind the ATV's and their drivers. Maybe coping with them is a Buddhist test of patience and tolerance? Enlighten yourself, surf to Mark's website and take the first step to experiencing it all yourself.
